If you aren’t sure whether you need a change just scroll down a bit and take the quick 3 question career happiness quiz. I’ll wait for you up here.
Ok, if you know you aren’t happy and getting the best results out of your career then let’s look at why.
Too often we let fear dictate our choices. I like to call this negative inner voice my inner arch nemesis.
That little voice that holds you back from taking action.
You must believe you have talents that aren’t being utilized to their full potential. You also have to believe that you are meant to do work that helps people that matter to you.
I was stuck in a rut for so many years and I didn’t know what to do. I woke up tired and went to bed tired. I got very sick and I was afraid to try new things to grow my career.
In 2011 I was laid off after 7 years. On my drive home, after the CEO let me go, I pulled the car over and screamed, laughed, and cried. I felt so relieved and scared at the same time.
Being laid off from my steady job scared the heck out of me, after my fear settled I finally opened my eyes to the truth. My career was dead long before I was laid off. I should have taken action sooner. I would have put myself in better position to thrive instead of just trying to survive.
I realized that being laid off and recovering from my illness that I had to take back control of my career. It took two big life changing events to help me get a better grasp of how to turn an average career into something great. There were so many little warning signs that I ignored.
The first part of my career turnaround began by understanding one simple fact.
I had choices.
I chose to go into work every day. I chose to complain. I chose not to live a career that made me happy.
I stopped understanding the “why” behind my choices.
When I was happy I worked on projects that I cared about like my blog, a book, charity event at work, and projects that truly challenged me to help people I cared about (financial literacy to teenagers). When I was unhappy I let other people dictate my choices.
Finally, after many weeks I added it all up and created the most important shift that helped me stop making the same big mistake year after year. But before I explain, you should probably take the 2 minute quiz.
Take the Career Happiness Quiz
When you enjoy your work, you do great work. You dig deeper to get the results that make you happy. Let’s get a quick idea of how happy you are in your career, grab a pen and paper and take a few moments to answer these three questions, using a scale of 1-10:
- How excited are you to go into work?
- How much do you enjoy your work rather than the paycheck you receive?
- How much do you live your core values at work?
If you scored a 27 or more you are already doing work that makes you happy. If you score a 23 or below you aren’t living a career that makes you happy. If you are below 20 then you should take action today.
Quick Story
I worked with a very talented woman who rose to VP of Human Resources very quickly. She seemed to have it all. When we first talked I didn’t think she needed my help. Then we dug into her core values and found out that she wasn’t living any of them in her career. By the end of the call she was crying. She had been struggling for so many years and wasn’t sure how to fix it.
She lost her passion for her work. How could she work at a job that didn’t allow her to live her core values? She wanted to quit that day.
This was not the immediate solution to her problem. Quitting is usually one of the last options I suggest to my clients because they need to build back up their foundation (internal happiness, mindset, and how to work on projects that they care about) before they are ready to find something better.
When we went through her core values, passions, and strengths, we figured out what she really wanted to accomplish then we created some clarity that made her choices over the next 6 months so much easier. She actually stayed at her job. She emailed me 3 months later and her passion came back, but she knew it was time to move on. She created a plan to help quit in less than a year. I was so proud of her.

Your Choice
As I talked about earlier I made a lot of little mistakes that kept adding up. I cheated myself out of my best work because I couldn’t stop my inner arch nemesis (inner negative voice) from dictating my choices. That little voice in my head that told me again and again that I couldn’t do work that I cared about. I was my own worst enemy.
The vision for my career got smaller and smaller. I stopped believing in myself.
You are your greatest champion or your worst enemy. If you allow other people to dictate your choices, you won’t feel free to do the kind of work that excites you. You have to take back control and that means starting with your why behind your choices. You have many choices that you choose each day. Whether you are choosing to add or subtract to your happiness is up to you.
When you accept how many choices you really do have, it can be overwhelming at first. You can choose to not go into work, now the consequences might not be worth it, but it’s still a choice. The best part is you can create your own choices that aren’t currently on your list. Your own projects that build your resume, increase your happiness, and challenge you to grow.
You have choices to grow your career or you can choose the same options that continue to hold you back.
What is your happiness worth to you?
Your career has its ups and downs, but if you have extended down periods this can seriously hurt your relationships, health, and happiness. A great career is a catalyst for a better life.
If you are ready to add choices and projects to your career that will help you grow personally and professionally then this guide is for you. Just click one of the options below.

Rave Reviews
“I had sessions with other coaches that felt unproductive because they merely revisited business growth exercises I’d previously learned about in books. Karl focused instead on helping me identify the action steps around my short-term and long-term goals. As someone who thrives on organization and forward momentum, I appreciated working with someone who focuses on results.” – Lori Deschene, Founder of Tiny Buddha
“Karl provides an empathetic ear to the sometimes overwhelming challenges of work/life/happiness balance while also encouraging action that will change either your attitude or your actions with positive results.” – Linda Buntrock, VP of Human Resources
“Karl, I’ve suffered from mild depression for YEARS I won’t go into the psychology of it but finding ways to feel happy has always been a challenge for me. You have helped me more than any medicine has because you’re changing the way I THINK! I LOVE THIS! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! God’s given you a great gift.” – Jessica M.
