Interviews, Quotes and Quick Mindset Tip #001

I did it again. I picked my nose while I was driving. I didn’t even realize I did it until after I was done. It’s a bad habit and I don’t like that I automatically do this when I drive. I noticed that I do this when I’m feeling anxious. It gives me something to do while I’m stuck at a red light.

I’ve also been breathing into my chest instead of my belly when I’m working. It’s causing chest pain and increasing my stress. I seem to cope better with life when I breathe into my belly.

I’m letting bad habits creep back in because I’m feeling uncomfortable. I’ve been working on making healthier choices, but it’s been a little harder to make good choices lately. I’ve known that I do these things for a couple years now and I still have trouble overwriting these habits in my brain.

I noticed that to truly go deep into my habits the number one skill is awareness. I have to check in with myself more often so I can be more aware of how I’m reacting to a situation. If I’m picking my nose it’s usually because I’m having trouble letting go of my worries. If I’m breathing into my chest it’s because I’m stressing about work.

You need to build in touchbase triggers to check your body more often. So your goal, when you sit down, could be to take a quick scan of your body. Make sure you’re not doing your bad habit because you’re worried and caught in your thoughts.

It’s important that you are relaxed and enjoying the moment you’re in. This does take practice to change these habits, but the more you practice, especially at night (Good article to help you create an evening routine), the better you will get at building habits that help you. I suggest working on building these habits at the end of the day. You want to practice these good habits before bed to build up these neural connections in your brain. If you practice observing your thoughts before bed you are building your awareness and making it easier to notice your anxious thoughts the next day.
